Over 47 days Hawks Senior Coach Alastair Clarkson will share his thoughts on each player on the Hawthorn list - from guernsey number 48 to 2.

What Clarko says

29. Tom Murphy

Thanks for sharing your views on our 2012 list as part of our summer series - it’s been a great forum to engage in conversation about our players and their prospects for the upcoming season.

Today’s featured player is Tom Murphy who will wear guernsey number 29 once again.

Tom was drafted to the Hawks in 2004 in what turned out to be a super-draft for our Club which secured pivotal players such as Lance Franklin, Jordan Lewis, Jarryd Roughead and Clinton Young.

Tom is very important to the structure of our Club - he’s played mostly in the back-end and has played a very consistent role in the back half of the ground for the best part of three seasons.

His greatest feature as a player and one that we recognised as he was moving through his junior footy at the Sandringham Dragons is his concentration and his ability to negate an opposition key player and to provide us with some really good structures.

Tom’s played a lot of his footy on the more dangerous opposition players; the more small-medium types whom against he has a very good record and perhaps that is why he is regarded so highly by his coaching staff and teammates here at the Club.

He’s a leader and provides great direction and guidance to our defensive players because of his discipline and work ethic.

I’m sure Tom will continue to be an important part of our team as we challenge some of the top sides in the competition.

As a lot of those sides have dangerous goal kickers in their front-half, I’m sure ‘Murph’ will continue to be of a very high value to our football Club.

We’re looking forward to his prospects throughout the course of the 2012 season.

Tomorrow we feature a young player in Paul Puopolo who came to our Club for the first time last year and played 20 games in our side.
