THREE Hawks players have been recognised for their outstanding 2012 seasons by being named in the 2012 All Australian team.

Grant Birchall (half back), Lance Franklin (centre half forward) and Cyril Rioli (half forward) were announced as being members of the team at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne on Monday night.

Birchall, a first time All Australian has enjoyed an outstanding season on the half backline for the Hawks.

He has averaged 23 disposals in 21 matches this season and has been a key component to Coach Alastair Clarkson’s 2012 Hawthorn model.

The dashing defender has provided the Hawks with great run and carry off half back, and averages three rebound 50s per match.

His standout match this season was his 32 possession effort against the Power in the Round 20 win.

Franklin has booted 63 goals so far, and despite missing six matches at the tail end of the season, he has enjoyed another stellar year for the Hawks.

His athleticism and abilty to play in a variety of roles, whether a stay at home forward or pushing up into the midfield, the 196cm forward is a valuable contributor for the Hawks.

His 2012 season will, to date be remembered for his 13-goal haul against the Kangaroos in Round 10. In a career-best display, Franklin provided the crowd in Tasmania with a rare, exciting display of skill in the Hawks’ crushing win over the Kangaroos.

Exciting small forward Rioli’s tackling pressure and ability to impact a match with or without the ball has earned him a spot on in the team’s half forward line.

Rioli has averaged five tackles per game and has kicked 35 goals in his 21 matches to date.

While Rioli’s goal sense and unqiue speed may win him fanfare, the Hawks’ small forward too, is as hard working as any of his teammates. His ability to push into the midfield and provide a spark when the Hawks need it most is testament, winning an average of two clearances per game.

Midfielder Sam Mitchell was also nominated for the All Australian team but wasn’t named in the 22 on Monday night.
