HAWTHORN premiership midfielder Xavier Ellis will be assessed by the club early this week after straining the medial ligament in his knee on Saturday in the VFL.

Playing for Box Hill, Ellis limped off after injuring his knee in the dying stages of his team's six-point win against Williamstown.

The 24-year-old was one of the Hawks' best through the midfield and he also made a key smother before the incident occurred.

Ellis has not played an AFL game in 2012 after struggling to overcome a significant calf injury earlier in the year.
