Roughead shrugs off colour controversy
Hawthorn key forward not concerned by colours worn by umpires in Sunday's win over Richmond
Coach Alastair Clarkson slammed the AFL over the perceived colour clash in his post-match media conference, saying: "Why would you wear that colour when one side is wearing gold and another side wearing yellow? It's absolutely ludicrous."
But AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson hit back on Monday morning, saying the problem, if there was one, was caused by the Hawks changing from the predominantly white strip that they were scheduled to wear to their traditional yellow and brown guernsey.
Roughead said he had no problems differentiating the men in lime green from his teammates.
"I didn't personally notice, but I think a few boys were a little bit worried," he said at Waverley Park on Monday morning.
"It's something the AFL is going to have to deal with not us, I don't think.
"We'll leave it up to them - no worries with me."
While Roughead wasn't concerned with the colours worn by Sunday's umpires, the Hawks do have significantly bigger worries. With just two wins on the board after eight rounds, they face an in-form Carlton on Sunday. The Blues have knocked off St Kilda and Port Adelaide in convincing fashion in the last two weeks, and have won four of their last five matches, losing only to competition pace-setter Collingwood.
Roughead said his side needed to increase its forays inside 50 - after managing just 38 against the Tigers - and to put the brakes on the speedy Blues.
"I think just stopping their runners - they're a great running side, and they've got some quick elusive forwards that we probably need to get a handle on," he said.
"If we can stop that, and stop the flow into their forward 50, then that'll help us a fair bit as well."
Midfielder Jordan Lewis said last week that Hawthorn still had enough games in hand to make the finals, but Roughead wouldn't be drawn on the subject.
"We're not thinking that far ahead - everyone's going to say that old cliché about one week at a time, and that's what it is," he said.
"We've got a hard game this weekend against a team that's in really good form in Carlton, and we've just got to try and get out there and do what we did on the weekend and try and play some consistent footy."
