SPEARHEAD Lance Franklin booted a career-best 13 goals in the Hawks’ 115-point victory over North Melbourne at Aurora Stadium on Saturday.
Franklin was quiet early, as the Kangaroos’ pressure in the midfield forced the Hawks to bomb the ball long into their full forward.
No one could have predicted, however, that when Franklin booted his first major of the day with 15 seconds remaining in the opening term, that he would go on to boot five goals in the second, four in the third and three in the final term.
It was an incredible effort from a man who has been criticised in recent weeks for his inability to convert opportunities in front of goal.
Before Saturday’s match, Franklin had booted 21.36 - with a conversion rate of just 34 per cent.
Coach Alastair Clarkson, however, predicted a turnaround in form for his main man up forward on Friday, declaring that Franklin would “work out” his issues in front of the big sticks.
The Hawks’ coach even went so far as to say that Franklin is “only a quarter away or a game away from him just tearing a game apart.”
He couldn’t have been more right.
It would be optimistic to think though, that Clarkson could have foreseen a 13-goal haul from Franklin on a day hardly suited for AFL footy.
Rain fell in Tasmania in the lead up to the game as players battled greasy conditions in the opening term.
An electrifying performance was underlined in the final moments of the match though, as Franklin spilled a regulation mark only to keep the ball in front of him, swing onto his left boot to snap his thirteenth goal of the match as the siren sounded to end a great day out for the Hawks.
Franklin was a colossus up forward, and backed up his 23 possessions, 11 marks and 13 goals four with six bone-crunching tackles that had North Melbourne defenders quivering at the sight of the Hawks’ no.23.
