Box Hill snatched a remarkable come from behind victory against Williamstown at the newly redeveloped Burbank Oval on Saturday afternoon.

In wet conditions, the performances of midfielder Luke Andrews alongside Hawthorn-listed trio Amos Frank, Tom Murphy and the returning Xavier Ellis were crucial.

The Hawks overturned a 26-point quarter time deficit as well as coming from behind at three quarter time, one player short, to claim the six point victory.

“It was certainly one of our better performances in the couple of years I have been at the club, it showed a lot of fight and spirit,” Box Hill coach Damian Carroll said following the win.

“We knew it would go down to the wire, they just don’t give out four points down at Willy so, thankfully for us we got over the line.”

The move sees the Box Hill leapfrog the Seagulls into fifth position on the VFL ladder, sitting just one win outside the top four.

After coming out of the blocks the quicker of the two sides, Williamstown jumped to a 26-point quarter-time lead, holding the Hawks to a solitary goal for the term.

“We thought it was a two or three goal wind so we weren’t losing confidence but we just lost our way in the last 15 minutes of the first,” Carroll said.

Kyle Cheney’s solo effort on the wing in the second quarter led to the defender’s first goal of the day and sparked the Hawks into action.

The Seagulls were held to a single behind for the term as Damian Carroll’s side took full advantage of the wind to work their way back into the fixture.

Managing to hold the Seagulls to only three goals with the wind in the third term the Hawks appeared to be in the driver’s seat when Xavier Murphy brought the margin back to four points just before three-quarter time.

However, after being concussed following a sickening head clash, captain Daniel Pratt was forced to leave the field on a stretcher, leaving the Hawks with one less rotation on the bench with one quarter to play.

With Pratt off the field, much of the reliance turned to small forwards Derick Wanganeen and Frank. The pair delivered, booting four final quarter goals between them.

Frank’s three final term goals took his tally on the afternoon to four and proved vital in the end result. The small forward time and time again was a handful for the Seagull defence when the ball went to ground.

”He was sensational, the thing about Amos is that if he’s playing well he brings excitement to the team and I think that was really important in that last stanza,” Carroll said.

The Hawks defence managed to hold out for the final six minutes of the 34 minute long last quarter  to hang on to the one goal margin. Defenders Tom Murphy and David Mirra both taking crucial marks as the Seagulls charged home with the support of their home faithful.

Xavier Ellis was impressive in his return from injury collecting 21 possessions and coming up with a game saving smother in the final term. However the Hawthorn premiership player limped off the ground in the dying stages of the clash injuring his medial ligament.

“He just needs a little bit of luck for his body to hold together. He’s certainly one of those guys who is important for us and important for Hawthorn,” Carroll said.

Another solid performance from Schneider as the midfielder collected 22 possessions. Six clearances for Box Hill was a team-high and looked composed in possession as always.

Bruce is another who continued his good form at VFL level. His experience was crucial in a tight contest, finishing with 17 possessions. His two second quarter goals were vital in getting the Hawks back into the contest.

: Solid down back. Kept the dangerous Liam Jones goalless after quarter time and collected 14 disposals including five rebound 50’s. Copped a knock to his right knee in the first half but ran out the game.

Always a handful, the small forward was simply superb in the final term. Frank’s three last quarter goals helped the Hawks to victory. Finished the game with 13 possessions and had maximum scoreboard impact booting 4.3.

Angus Litherland:
Strong in defence, Litherland stood up as Williamstown pressed in the final term. Finished the game with 12 disposals

Jordan Kelly:
Like the rest of Box Hill’s defence, Kelly stood up late. Finished the game with two tackles and 12 disposals and was always composed in possession.
