HAWTHORN defender Brent Guerra has extended his contract with the Club

The 236-game veteran has played 140 matches for Hawthorn since making his way to the Club via the pre-season draft at the end of the 2005 season.

Guerra, a key member of Hawthorn’s defence is described by General Manager - Football Operations, Mark Evans as a person with great strength of character.

“Brent Guerra is an amazing success story as a Hawthorn player,” he told hawthornfc.com.au

“To have played at two clubs previously, then to come to this club and leave no stone unturned to make sure his career kept progressing and have played 236 games in his career already with the 250 games milestone in his sights, that alone shows you the guy has great resilience and great character.”

The defender has been a key player in Coach, Alastair Clarkson’s plans in recent seasons, with his excellent kicking skills and ability to lock-down his opponent features of his game.

His consistency too, wins him praise from his coaches and teammates, and as he embarks on his 13th AFL season, Evans believes Guerra is one of Hawthorn’s most reliable players.

He enjoyed an excellent 2012 season, where he averaged 18.4 disposals from the back pocket.

“Over the last couple of years he’s become one of the most consistent, reliable members of the team,” he said.

“At the start of this year he had a terrific purple patch where you could just count on him whatever happened.”

He shows great commitment to his teammates and his Club on the field and reflects those attributes off it.

Those characteristics were best illustrated when he withdrew from Grand Final calculations with a hamstring injury.

“That’s a brilliant example to set, in one of the most important games of your life, to be able to say this is more about the Club than it is about me, as tough as it is on me, this is what has to happen,” Evans said.

“It highlights the quality of the person.”

At 30 years of age and with the 250 game milestone beckoning, Evans hinted Guerra could play on beyond this contract.

“With 236 games under his belt and the way he plays his footy, so tough and hard and uncompromising he would know every season could be his last,” he said.

“He’d have to take some great encouragement out of the last two seasons, that there’s still plenty of fight left in Brent Guerra.”
