Brown was named on the half-back line along with Geelong’s Matthew Egan and Adelaide’s Andrew McLeod, who was named captain of the 2007 All-Australian side.
Brown’s selection was welcomed by the Club, with Hawthorn’s General Manager of Football Operations, Mark Evan’s, citing Brown’s ability to play above his height, and his no-nonsense defensive style as the defender’s major contribution in 2007.
“Campbell has had an outstanding year. Playing in a different role this season, he’s taken on some of the games best centre-half forwards, standing at 5ft 10”, sometimes he gives away five inches to his opponent.
“So it’s just a tremendous result for Campbell to make All-Australian after being given those tasks.”
The Hawks had three other candidates amongst the All-Australian short list of 40, from which the final 22 was selected. Star forward Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin, and midfielders Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell, can consider themselves unlucky not to be named All-Australian, after all enjoying their best season yet at senior level.
“’Buddy’ Franklin was unlucky not to be selected I feel, given that by the end of our finals series, he had kicked 73 goals – and to not have made it, even if that was to be as an interchange player. But he is 20 years of age and we feel that he will have plenty of opportunity somewhere in the future,” Evans said.
“Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge have also had fantastic seasons. And if you asked me who I thought would win the Peter Crimmins Medal – I couldn’t tell you because you have players like Hodge, Mitchell, Brown, (Brad) Sewell, Franklin, (Trent) Croad, (Jordan) Lewis and (Shane) Crawford have all had very good seasons.”
