New look, same approach for Lewis
Hawk Jordan Lewis is carrying less bulk, but don't expect him to attack contests any differently
Lewis has shed seven kilograms since the end of last season but said he has not lost his ability to win the contested ball.
“I’ve maintained my strength by losing the weight, but I think it’s mainly endurance and being able to run out the games would probably be the biggest difference,” Lewis said.
"Obviously being a little bit lighter you can perform more consistently on the track. I didn’t go out at the start of pre-season to lose this much but it just so happens that I did.
Cyril Rioli and Shaun Burgoyne will not be in this week’s team to take on the Tigers in round one of the NAB Cup, but Lewis said the Hawks will approach the start of the season at close to full strength, which is in stark contrast to last year’s horror run with injury.
“It’s a credit to our fitness guy ‘Jack’ Russell and the guys who work with him," said Lewis.
"Getting everyone up at this time of the year has been really good, compared to previous years ... All the boys are raring to go.
“We had some stats put up the other day which were pretty mind-boggling - the amount of running we’ve done over pre-season and we’ve come back a month earlier than we did the previous year."
The Hawks missed out on the finals last season and Lewis says the team is looking to return to the form that brought them the ultimate success in 2008.
“I think every guy who was on the list last year is very disappointed with how it played out; to only win nine games after winning a premiership in 2008 was very disappointing," he said.
"This year is not about revenge, but about getting that hunger back that we got over pre-season and hopefully having a successful year.
“I think any side that finishes out of the top eight wants to prove that is not the side they are and our main aim is to play finals. If we don’t play finals we’ve let ourselves down again.”
