HAWTHORN Assistant Coach Luke Beveridge says the Hawks need to keep improving, despite the Club winning its past four matches.

Since the Round 9 loss to Richmond, the Hawks have been ruthless in their approach to football, with crushing wins over North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Brisbane and Carlton.

The Hawks now sit just one game out of the top four with a healthy percentage ahead of Sunday’s match against Greater Western Sydney at the MCG.

Beveridge says the Richmond loss could have been the catalyst for the Hawks’ recent stretch of good form, but the team now needs to focus on building on their momentum.

“It (the Richmond game) was a bit of an alert,” he said.

“Maybe Richmond gave us a bit of a wake-up call, but Sydney were very good as well like that.

“We know that we just have to keep improving.”

While the Hawks are striving for their fifth straight win in as many weeks, the Hawks won’t be resting on their laurels.

“We’re getting some credit points in the bank and we’re definitely happier with the way we’re going, there’s no doubt about that,” Beveridge said.

“You continue to be mindful that week to week, anyone can get you.

“We’re trying not to focus any further than our next opponent, which is obviously GWS this week and making sure that any lapse in concentration or energy doesn’t bite us.

“We need to recognize that we’ve done some things really well, and to do those well again, we need to make sure that everyone in the 22 is ready to go.”

The Giants have won just one match in their debut season, against fellow newcomers Gold Coast in Round 7.

Despite their lowly rank on the AFL ladder, the competition’s newest side has shown glimpses of what the football world can expect in the coming years.

That in itself, Beveridge admits is a threat.

“You try and tackle it from an angle that they’ve won one game but you don’t want to be the team that lets them win their second,” he said.

“We need to be really guarded against their strengths and we need to make sure that we continue on with our good method as well.

“They’ve got some really talented young guys, who, as the years go on are going to be some of the best talent in the land - so they can creep up on us pretty early, and we don’t want to let them.”

When the first ball is bounced, however, Beveridge says that the win-loss ratio of both sides will count for nothing, and the Hawks won’t be taking the expansion club lightly.

“We won’t be focusing too much on them from that point of view at the first bounce, we’ll be making sure that our intensity is there and we’re ready to win those first contests,” he said.

“We’ll use that as a platform for the rest of the game.

“We’ll be ready.”
