Round 8 Footy Flashbacks
Michael Tuck made his Hawthorn debut in Round 8 40 years ago and made an immediate impact, kicking goals with his first three kicks...
A crowd of 25,661 turned up for the 1972 game, as top team Hawthorn took on fifth placed Richmond at Waverley.
Tuck was 18 years old, and when he made his final appearance in the 1991 Grand Final, he was 38 years old. In his 20 seasons at the top level, he played 426 games, 39 Finals, 11 Grand Finals and been a member of seven Premiership teams - all VFL-AFL records.
Interestingly, after goaling with his first three kicks, Tuck did not kick another major until his 11th game in Round 10 1973. After playing five games in his debut season, he made 11 appearances in 1973, and became a regular in 1974.
Despite Tuck’s efforts, Hawthorn lost that game, going down to the Tiger by seven points. Accurate goal-kicking saw the Hawks lead by 20 points at half-time (9.2 to 4.12), but were then outscored 6.6 to 0.1 in the third.
Hawthorn came again in the last quarter, kicking four goals to one, but eventually went down by 7 points - 13.6.84 to 11.25.91. Sharing the goal-kicking honours with Tuck was another iconic name, Leigh Matthews.
Best players were Moore, Matthews, Crimmins, Meagher, Porter and Parkin.
Hawthorn has a perfect record against Fremantle at Aurora Stadium, winning five out of five.
The most recent game was in 2010, when Hawthorn recorded a massive 116 point Round 21 win. Two weeks later, Fremantle turned the tables in the Elimination Final at Subiaco.
Last season, the teams met twice. In Round 11, the teams played at the MCG for the first time ever, with Hawthorn overcoming an 18-point three-quarter-time deficit to win by 22 points.
Cyril Rioli kicked 5 goals and Luke Bruest 3, while Grant Birchall got 3 Brownlow votes and Sam Mitchell 2.
Later in the season, the Hawks also beat the Dockers at Subiaco - 13.17.95 to 6.8.44, making the overall head-to-head between the two clubs 18-7 in Hawthorn’s favour.
Hawthorn's score last Friday night, 15.25.115 brought back memories of another bout of inaccurate kicking against Melbourne at the MCG.
In Round 13 1985, Hawthorn kicked 11.31.97, including a 0.10 third quarter. The worst offender was Michael Byrne who kicked 0.8, while another to kick multiple behinds was Peter Knights with 3.5.
Unlike last Friday night, in 1985 the poor kicking for goal almost cost the Hawks the game as with just minutes to go Melbourne had the chance to take the lead. Moments later, Rodney Eade passed to Steve Malaxos who goaled for the Hawks to clinch a 16-point win.
Richard Loveridge was best-on-ground and described by The Age as “the man who stamped real class on the game”, explaining that he “did not simply collect a bag of possessions, he used the ball beautifully”.
60 years ago, in Round 8 1952, Hawthorn played in the unusual location of Euroa as part of the VFL’s ‘Propaganda Round’ - where all six matches were played outside Melbourne in both interstate and country locations.
A crowd of 7,500 saw the 11th placed Hawks take on Carlton (fifth), and while competitive in the middle two quarters, poor opening and final terms produced an 11.14.80 to 17.15.117 defeat. Jim Robison kicked 3 goals.
This Saturday, Lance Franklin will play his 150th game. His tally of 470 goals after 149 games makes him the third most productive goal-kicker to this stage of a career in Hawthorn history. Heading the list is Peter Hudson, who only played a total of 129 games, in which he kicked 727 goals, followed by Jason Dunstall, who after 149 games had 664 goals. Next behind Franklin for goals after 149 games are Michael Moncrieff 388, Leigh Matthews 356 and Dermott Brereton 330.
10 years ago, in Round 8 2012, Hawthorn recorded its fourth successive win, grounding out a nine point victory against lowly Carlton at the MCG, after trailing by seven points at the final change. Angelo Lekkas had 30 disposals and Shane Crawford 28.
25 years ago, in Round 8 1987, Hawthorn’s key forwards, Jason Dunstall and Dermott Brereton kicked 13 goals between them in Hawthorn’s 17.10.112 to 10.5.65 win against Geelong in front of a Princes Park crowd of just 9,382.
30 years ago, in Round 8 1982, Hawthorn lost a high-scoring Princes Park thriller to Essendon by a goal- 16.15.111 to 15.15.105. Gary Buckenara and Mike Moncrieff each booted 4 goals, while Terry Wallace continued his outstanding season with 32 disposals. Throughout the last quarter the margin oscillated between one and two goals, but the hawks could never get consecutive goals to get on even terms. Hawthorn supporters were also left lamenting a questionable last quarter free-kick against Kelvin Moore which resulted in an Essendon goal.
50 years ago, in Round 8 1962, Hawthorn defeated Essendon at Glenferrie by 17 points - 9.15.69 to 7.10.52. Garry Young kicked 3 goals.
In 86 matches played in Round 8, Hawthorn has won 43 and lost 43 (having had a bye 1992). It has been one of the best rounds for the Hawks in recent times, with 10 wins in the last 12 seasons, including the last five in a row.
Twice in the past five years the Hawks have been 32 points behind at quarter time in Round 8, but in both cases recovered, beating Port Adelaide by 15 points at Aurora Stadium in 2008 and to defeating St Kilda by 30 points last season at the MCG. Another recent significant Round 8 win was in 2010, when a Sam Mitchell tackle in the dying seconds secured a season-saving three point victory against Richmond at the MCG.
The most goals by a Hawthorn player against Fremantle is the tally of 8 by Mark Williams in Round 1 2006, in Launceston. The big names dominate the leading goal-kickers in Round 8. Peter Hudson booted 13 in this round in 1970 against South Melbourne, while Jason Dunstall kicked 10 in 1994 (against Brisbane).
