Hawthorn players Josh Gibson and Isaac Smith helped put a smile on the faces of some seriously ill children on Monday morning with a trip to the Starlight Express Room at the Royal Children's Hospital.

Defender Gibson, at the hospital the day after playing in the Hawks' 22-point win over Fremantle at the MCG on Sunday, said the challenges facing the children he met put life's other problems in perspective.

"Getting six goals kicked on you, sometimes you might be depressed, but compared to what other people are going through, issues like that are pretty minor," he told hawthornfc.com.au.

The Starlight room offers computer games, movies, crafts and other activities, giving sick children a distraction from the battles they face.

"To have a little space where they can relax and take their mind off some of the serious surgeries or whatever they're going through is really good," Gibson said.

"The staff in here are fantastic, they're dressed up in their crazy captain's outfits and what they're doing for these kids is great.

"It's good to be able to come down and give a little bit of my time."

Hawthorn players will visit the Starlight Express Rooms in both the children’s hospital and Monash Medical Centre throughout the year.

The Club also grants Starlight wishes such as meeting players and game-day experiences to kids when they come about.
