Key Hawks ready to return
Stuart Dew, Xavier Ellis and Clinton Young are pressing to make the side to face Adelaide on Sunday at AAMI Stadium
Hawthorn has won its past two matches, and is set to add premiership midfielder Xavier Ellis to its line-up this Sunday. Stuart Dew and Clinton Young, who played for Box Hill on the weekend, will also push for a recall.
Versatile Hawk Campbell Brown said Ellis was waiting in the wings after an injury-interrupted season so far.
"He's [been] really good [in the VFL. He got the medal for best-on-ground last week at Box Hill, which he was rapt about," he said.
"He was telling us all about it, so he's definitely available for selection this week."
Superstar Luke Hodge (adductor injury) is likely to return against the Sydney Swans at the MCG in round 11.
"He's probably a week away, but they're going to assess his groin," Brown said from Waverley Park on Monday.
"With a player like Luke, he's one guy you could bring straight back into the side, but that'll be up to the coaches and the fitness staff to work out exactly where he is at.
"If he does need an extra bit of match practice, he can go down to Box Hill like anyone else at the club. Hopefully, he can get up and about over the next few weeks."
Key defenders Trent Croad (foot) and Stephen Gilham (knee) look to be longer-term propositions.
"They'd be handy to get back in there. They'd certainly do us a big favour," Brown said.
"They're going along alright … they're both progressing really well.
Ellis has been starring at VFL level, while Young and Dew have raking kicking skills that would be valuable at AAMI Stadium.
A couple of Hawthorn players are battling injury after the 22-point win over Melbourne on Sunday.
Cameron Stokes (hamstring) and Garry Moss (calf) face fitness tests this week, but Brown is hopeful they'll be fit to play.
"I don't think [they'll miss] … so it's nothing serious, but you don't want to risk them in case (of) further injury," he said.
Brown joined the chorus of praise for Beau Muston after his outstanding debut against the Demons.
The rangy Muston won 31 possessions, kicked a goal and looked every bit an AFL player.
"The footy gods smiled on him [with] 31 touches and a great goal. It was some sort of debut," Brown said.
"I don't think you expect any player in their first game to do that – especially coming off the injuries that he's had.
"He found the ball straight away and had 10 possessions in the first quarter, and it showed great persistence. He trains as hard as anyone at the club, and some of his rehab work has been fantastic.
"The whole club was really rapt for him and his family, who came down, so it was great for him."
Brown said the challenge for Muston now was to sustain that form.
"Beau has now got to try and back it up," Brown said.
Although the 22-year-old endured three knee reconstructions before his debut, Brown said Muston's delayed start at AFL level allowed the midfielder time to build up his upper-body strength in the gym.
