Rioli rises
Hawthorn star takes a spectacular mark in the second term of Friday night's blockbuster with Collingwood at the MCG
CYRIL Rioli has staked a very early claim for Mark of the Year in the second term of the MCG blockbuster between Hawthorn and Collingwood on Friday night.
The star Hawk lit up the MCG with an enormous leap over Collingwood's Heath Shaw on the forward flank shortly after quarter-time.
Rioli hovered on the shoulders of Shaw and clunked the mark, helping set up a much-needed goal to Brendan Whitecross.
Rioli kicked another vital Hawk goal minutes later, when he used his electrifying speed to burn off Harry O'Brien to run into an open goal.
Rioli's screamer could result in both mark and goal of the year being won in the first round of the new season, as it came less than 24 hours after Carlton's Chris Yarran produced an early contender for Goal of the Year in the Blues' clash against Richmond.
