HAWTHORN midfielder Jordan Lewis will miss Sunday's blockbuster against Collingwood, and the Hawks' following game against the Brisbane Lions, after the tribunal upheld his two-match suspension for headbutting Essendon forward Angus Monfries.

In a hearing at AFL House on Tuesday evening, Lewis pleaded not guilty, claiming he had used insufficient force for the incident to be a reportable offence.

He also disputed the match review panel's classification that the contact, which occurred during the third quarter of the Hawks' big win at the MCG on Friday night, was intentional.

Lewis' advocate, Chris Townshend SC, added that Monfries had gone to ground after the confrontation because he was staging for a free-kick.

Townshend told the tribunal: "On a level of force, it wouldn't make a grandma blush but it might make her giggle in terms of the reaction of the player."

But the tribunal, which was made up of former Hawthorn player Richard Loveridge, North Melbourne champion Wayne Schimmelbusch and ex-Sydney Swans forward Wayne Henwood, found that Lewis had deliberately headbutted Monfries.

He will now be forced to join more than 80,000 people in the stands at the MCG on Sunday when his teammates try to topple the Magpies.

"Obviously disappointed," Lewis said after the hearing. "I just didn't think there was a lot in it, so unfortunately I won't be out there for the next couple of weeks.

"But we move on."

The 25-year-old, who has played a total of 138 AFL games, was one of the most impressive contributors in Hawthorn's victory over Essendon.

He gathered 29 possessions and booted two goals.

If Lewis had accepted the match review panel's initial finding, he would have been banned for only one game.
