HAWTHORN premiership player Trent Croad is optimistic of formalising a new deal with his club and reigniting his career in 2010.

A foot injury sustained in last year's grand final sidelined him for the entire 2009 season, with the key defender sorely missed by the Hawks this year.

His absence was one of many reasons why Hawthorn dipped and missed out on the final eight.

It has been reported Croad is likely to sign a new one-year deal.

"Everything's good and underway there, so over the next few weeks everything will be sorted," he told afl.com.au about his contract situation.

"The surgery [on his foot] was good and everything is coming together nicely," Croad said.

Croad is swimming at the moment as part of his rehabilitation, but he has greater priorities coming up soon with the impending birth of his child. He is also looking forward to a relaxing break over the next few weeks.

As for watching on in grand final week this year, Croad said it was a frustrating feeling, although he is confident about Hawthorn bouncing back hard in 2010.

"It's always a good week to enjoy to watch the best two teams go at it, but unfortunately we weren't this year, but I'm sure we'll be up and about next year," he said.

"It's always disappointing for every team that doesn't get there.

"After last year, it's disappointing we're not there, but we'll be up and about."
