VFL Round 4
Werribee Tigers v Box Hill Hawks
Sunday 3 May, 2pm
Barter Card Oval

Box Hill Hawks fighting hard all day gallantly fell short to Werribee beaten by 21 points at Chirnside Park. (Werribee Tigers 13.12.90 v Box Hill Hawks 10.9.69)

A tough contest right throughout, the Tigers pace, run and height was just too much for the Hawks. Losing Adem Yze midway during the 2nd term added to the loss the 1st for the season.

Playing for the inaugural Beyond Blue Cup, the clash played to a large crowd from both entourages.

With a physical start to the game, Werribee gained the momentum kicking 4 in a row as the Hawks looked for answers. Riley Milne set up Ryan Schoenmakers converting keeping the team in touching distance. Kennedy, Neil and Pedersen were all getting a lot of the ball early as the Hawks trailed by 19 at the break.

Sam Iles got the ball rolling in the 2nd with a quick goal only minutes in. Ben McGlynn continued his form from last week with some hard tackling and work with the football. Going goal for goal, both sides equally shared the footy. Werribee’s tall forwards split the Hawks as dangerous Nathan Thompson kicked truly. McQueen-Miscamble worked hard in defence with some brilliant spoils and tackling as the Tigers looked to take charge.

Holding Werribee’s scoring, the Hawks into the 3rd pumped through two quick goals through McGlynn and Boyle. Lukas Markovic defensively kept the Tigers at bay as the Hawks had a burst of momentum. Shiels finished the term with a goal from a snap placing Box Hill in a good position only trailing by 14 at three-quarter time. Kicking 3.3 to Werribee’s 1.1 the Hawks worked hard limiting Werribee’s opportunities up forward.

In the final term an early goal by Cam Pedersen broke the deficit to eight points. Steve Kenna outran the game brilliantly setting up play through the middle against much taller opposition. Curnow and Gibson continued to try and lift Box Hill as the game ran away. Kennedy tapping the ball onto Iles was able to put a goal back for respectability running through the forward fifty from twenty out.

After a great start to the season, Werribee brings Box Hill Hawks its first loss. Tim Boyle kicking four played a great game also setting up many others. Regular possession winners Kennedy, Curnow and Markovic all had solid performances.
