HAWTHORN skipper Luke Hodge looks certain to line up in the Grand Final against the Sydney Swans, but defender Brent Guerra is struggling to overcome the hamstring injury he suffered in round 23.

Hodge was a late withdrawal from the Hawks side that defeated Adelaide by five points in a preliminary final at the MCG on Saturday evening.

"Oh well, he's not having a baby," Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said, responding to rumours that Hodge had missed the game to be with his heavily pregnant wife.

"I was the only one who had a baby in the last part of the game.

"He was just crook. He had gastro. When your captain rings the doctor and says 'I'm feeling a bit crook', you know he must be pretty crook.

"I spoke to him this morning and we gave him some time. The doctor went and spoke to him and we were hoping it would settle by sometime around lunchtime.

"But he was no good, so we made the call that Tom Murphy would come into the side.

"(Luke) just lacked a bit of energy, so he'll get a spell and be right for next week."

Guerra, meanwhile, suffered a hamstring tear during Hawthorn's win over West Coast three weeks ago.

"He's not too far away from full training, so he'll hopefully build himself up over the course of the week and we'll see how he goes," Clarkson said.

"He had a hamstring injury that's going to go right down to the wire.

"But he's done everything he could to give himself a chance to prove his fitness this week, and we'll give him every chance.

"He's an important player to us and he's been a great contributor to our footy club, so he deserves that chance."
