Well, we’re predicting long discussions at the selection table this week!
There are at least two senior positions up for grabs, with star defender James Sicily (ACL) and explosive midfielder Jaeger O’Meara (hand) both sidelined through injury.
After watching Sunday’s scrimmage match, there are a number of young Hawks putting up their hands.
James Cousins could be considered as a like-for-like replacement for O’Meara, with the youngster currently dominating the clearances in the reserves scratch matches. The 22-year-old has played 19 games across the last three seasons, but is yet to crack into the senior side in 2020.
Michael Hartley is another who has been on the cusp of selection for several weeks, with the defender hoping to make his brown and gold debut after defecting from the Bombers last year. He could be called upon to assist the back six, with James Frawley also a minor chance to miss after dislocating his thumb.
If the Hawks look to add another tall to the mix, both Jonathon Patton and Mitch Lewis would have to come into consideration. Both were among the best in Sunday’s reserves win over the Eagles and will be eager to return to AFL level.
If pace is the priority, Ollie Hanrahan is in strong form and has shown aptitude at AFL level. Finn Maginess is also edging closer, with GM-Football Graham Wright suggesting during his Facebook Live today that the first-year Hawk could be unveiled in the coming weeks.
Hawthorn’s Round 13 team will be confirmed at 6.20pm on Friday, ahead of Saturday afternoon’s clash against ladder leaders Port Adelaide.
