Damon Greaves would have been forgiven for losing hope that a senior call-up would happen in season 2020.
In his second year at the brown and gold, Greaves’ scrimmage match form had been solid but, despite being named as an emergency on occasion, the youngster entered the final month of the season without any exposure at AFL level.
How quickly things can change!
Greaves was finally given his chance in Round 16 against St Kilda, a chance the 20-year-old took with both hands.
In his three games to round out the season, the young Hawk returned averages of 17.4 disposals and 90.4 per cent disposal efficiency – numbers no one else in the league could match.
The next closest player league-wide across the home and away season was Eagle Shannon Hurn (15.9 disposals at 87.8 per cent).
Additionally, no player who featured at least three times in this year’s home and away season averaged more rebound 50s than Greaves.
Greaves recorded six, six and eight defensive 50 exits respectively over his three outings between Rounds 16 to 18.
A cool head and neat kicking proved the hallmarks of the Western Australian’s three-game span.
The defender now approaches his third pre-season with a greater understanding of what it takes at the elite level which will only help the youngster who coaches describe as a keen learner of the game.
