Hawthorn Coach Alastair Clarkson said he was immensely proud of his players ability to match it with a premiership contender in Melbourne on Saturday night.

The Hawks and Demons played out an edge-of-your-seat draw, the second of the home and away season.

Clarkson said it was his side's pressure levels that stood out for him.

"Over the course of the game, the pressure that we were able to apply meant that Melbourne weren't able to get their free-flowing game going in the middle of the ground," Clarkson said.

"That pressure gave us a chance to be right in the contest.

"We allowed them to get away to a bit of a start, but for us to outscore them for the rest of the game and win three of the four quarters - it was a real credit to our lads.

"To allow a top of the ladder side to get away from us and then be able to pull them back, we'll gain a helluva lot out of the game."
