Hawthorn Coach Alastair Clarkson said the side's endeavour was there, it just lacked the polish as the Hawks went down to Adelaide by 19 points at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. 

With the Crows leading the game for the majority of the night, Clarkson said the Hawks weren't ever able to snatch back any true momentum in the game.

"Probably the difference in the end was the polish of the two sides," Clarkson said. 

"Adelaide were able to control the ball a bit better than what we were.

"At different stages I thought we played a little bit too fast and frantic, and that's sometimes the way things unfold when you have an inexperienced group that are wanting to go at the game a little bit too quick rather than have the patience to compose themselves and use the ball a bit better.

"So, we played into Adelaide's hands a little bit in that way."

Clarkson stopped short of condemning his players' effort level though, still highlighting numerous positives to come from the Round 19 match-up.

"There were a lot of pleasing parts to our game too at the same time - we tackled well, our pressure was strong, we won clearances, we won inside 50s by a convincing margin but we just didn't have the polish to finish our work."
