Hawthorn Football Club's VFL team
Updated February 2024
Box Hill’s history stretches back as far as 1921, when the Box Hill Junior Football Club participated in local competition. Back then, there were two teams representing Box Hill in the Eastern Suburban Protestant Churches Football Association; Box Hill United and Box Hill City. In 1936, Box Hill amalgamated with Box Hill East to become the Box Hill Football Club. In 1951, the ‘White Horses’, as they were known back then, made their debut in the VFA competition, reaching finals for the first time five years later. The team then adopted the ‘Mustangs’ emblem in 1965. Three years later, Box Hill’s U19 team claimed the club’s first VFA premiership in any grade. The senior team then reached a Grand Final for the first time in 1970, but unfortunately lost the Division Two Grand Final to Coburg. In 1984, after enduring a tough financial period as a club, Box Hill dominated the VFA Division Two competition, claiming the premiership by 135 points against Oakleigh. After being a foundation member of the newly formed VFL in 1995, Box Hill then established an alliance with Hawthorn Football Club to form the Box Hill Hawks. A year later, they would win their first ever VFL premiership, with another two to follow in 2013 and 2018. The Box Hill/ Hawthorn alliance is the longest running VFL - AFL alignment and has yielded a range of successful outcomes, including premierships as well as an array of players and coaches from the program reaching AFL level.
