Hawthorn finished its 2021 campaign in a thrilling ending with a draw against Richmond on Saturday.

The draw marked the first between the two teams since they began playing against each other in 1925, which spans 161 matches.

It also signifies the first time in history that Hawthorn has ever drawn twice in a season, following its Round 18 draw against Melbourne, and the first time an AFL side has recorded two draws since Greater Western Sydney in 2017.

Aside from the significance of the draw, here are several other interesting stats came out from the game.

Hawks' disposals on top

Hawthorn recorded its second-highest disposals in a game for the season finishing with 423 against the Tigers.

The Hawks outnumbered Richmond (339) by 84 touches, and surpassed their 2021 average of 379.

Hawthorn's 423 touches was also the most of any team in Round 23, leading Adelaide (418) and Sydney (397).

The Hawks also led disposal efficiency at 78 per cent in their match, compared to Richmond’s 74.3 per cent.

The performance saw Hawthorn finish the season third in the league for total disposals and first for handballs.

Aside from disposals, the Hawks led across several areas during the game including in hit-outs (42-16), clearances (36-25) and contested possessions (129-126).

Brown and gold stand-outs

Tyler Brockman only came into Hawthorn's side on Saturday after Luke Breust was a late out with a knee injury.

But the exciting youngster made the most of his opportunity early, kicking an eye-catching goal in the first quarter.

The 18-year-old finished with three goals in a promising performance - his best outing of his rookie season - surpassing the first two rounds of 2021 where he kicked two goals in each game.

Meanwhile, Tom Mitchell once again led all players in the match for disposals, after finishing with 36 to his name in what was also his 150th game milestone.

As a result of the impressive performance, Mitchell was crowned the best ball-winner of the 2021 season with a total of 754 for the year, taking him to outright first over Western Bulldogs' Jack Macrae (743).

Mitchell has been a star for Hawthorn since crossing over from Sydney at the end of 2016, with a Brownlow Medal and two best and fairest wins to his name so far. 

Youth continue to impress

Aside from Brockman's trio of goals, an array of young Hawks aged 23 or under, continued to impressed in the final outing of the season.

Mitch Lewis finished with two goals to his name, while James Worpel continued to impress in the midfield with 25 disposals.

In his 10th game in his debut year, Lachlan Bramble also continued to bring the pressure to his opponents, finishing with four tackles to his name, which was just behind his career-best of five in the Melbourne draw.
