Will Day has taken out Hawthorn's Round 2 MVP following his impressive midfield performance on Sunday.

Having played a more central role so far this year, Day was a shining light on what was a grim day as the Hawks went down to Sydney by 81-points at the SCG.

The 21-year-old flew the flag for the brown and gold for most of the day, producing a strong performance as he finished with a team-high 26 touches and game-high seven clearances.

Day had broken his career-high clearances of three with six to three-quarter-time, as well as recording a career-best contested possessions of 11.

The 191cm youngster put on more size over the off-season as he made a move into the midfield group, and has since played increased time in the middle so far this season.

At the conclusion of the pre-season, midfield coach David Hale said Day's football IQ and clean ball use was something that particularly stood out amongst the group this summer.

"Hopefully with more experience and exposure that he'll get as an inside midfielder, he can continue to develop into someone that is not only good for our midfield, but good across the competition," Hale said.
