It's one of the most exciting clashes on the football calendar for Hawthorn fans each year - the Easter Monday blockbuster.

The Hawks will meet long-time rival Geelong at the MCG as they look to chase back-to-back wins against the reigning premiers.

Hawthorn defeated North Melbourne last week to record their first win of the season, while Geelong are yet to have registered a win so far this season, having fallen to Collingwood, Carlton and Gold Coast.

The game will be another big test for the young Hawks who have started the 2023 season with one win and two losses.

Following a fierce history of close encounters between the two, the Hawks will be hoping to notch their second consecutive Easter Monday win.

Last year’s match ended in a nail-biting finish, with the Hawks coming out on top by just two goals, marking a win against the odds on one of the biggest days of the AFL fixture.

Last time we met

Hawthorn (92) defeated Geelong (80) - Round 5, 2022

A ferocious contest from the opening seconds to the final moments, Hawthorn pulled off one of the upsets of the year last Easter Monday, defeating Geelong by 12 points.

While the Cats had previously won nine out of the past 11 Easter Monday encounters, last year saw the youth of Hawthorn get the chocolates, with Sam Mitchell's side outlasting the Cats in the 14.8 (92) to 11.14 (80) upset at the MCG.

Jai Newcombe set the tone in the opening seconds of the game by winning a huge contested ball steaming into Tom Stewart. It led to a Mitch Lewis goal 49 seconds into the game. Dylan Moore kicked a second goal minutes later and added a second from a second head high free kick to make it three goals before Geelong had registered a disposal six minutes into the game.

Hawthorn got to the first break 23 points up and just when the Hawks threatened to put some space between the two sides, after withstanding Geelong's momentum, Max Holmes stood up for the Cats, hitting Tom Hawkins with a clever snap which resulted in a goal, before snapping one of his own shortly after to reduce the margin to less than two goals. Then Moore kicked number four, this time crumbing and dribbling a goal at the city end as the rain started to tumble at the MCG.

It all came down to a moment in the dying 90 seconds when Luke Breust mopped up a contest in the centre of the ground and found Mitch Lewis all alone deep inside 50 before kicking the sealer.

Moore was a stand-out on the day, finishing with four goals and 19 disposals, while Jai Newcombe dominated through the middle recording a career-high 31 disposals in what was just his 12th game of AFL.

Our last game

Hawthorn recorded its first win of 2023 with a 19-point victory over the previously unbeaten North Melbourne in Launceston last Saturday.

Small forward Tyler Brockman, in his first game since Round 23 2021, booted three goals.

Will Day was cool under pressure with 28 disposals and four tackles, while James Sicily was Hawthorn's general in defence with 28 touches and a game-high 18 marks. Moore, who kicked the sealer, had 25 touches, seven inside 50s, two goals and two goal assists.

North started well kicking the opening goal inside the first two minutes, but Hawthorn soon took control, particularly off half-back, kicking the next three goals to lead by 13 points at the first change.

The Kangaroos got the jump again early in the second but Hawthorn responded with the next five goals, including two from the lively Brockman.

James Worpel's goal straight after half-time opened up a 32-point lead but North responded with more territory, booting the next five consecutive goals to close within 12 points at the last change.

Brockman then kicked a crucial snap with just over six minutes left in the last term, before handballing to Dylan Moore for the sealer with 3:42 remaining.
