Box Hill continued its unbeaten start to the season after taking down Collingwood by 59 points on Sunday. 

The home ground win was set up by a phenomenal first half which included an eight-goal second quarter, a feat made all the more remarkable given it was achieved in heavy winds and torrential rain.

Max Lynch proved the dominant big man on the ground as he tallied 43 hit-outs, while finishing second among his teammates with seven clearances, in addition to three marks and a goal.

Meanwhile, young developing ruck-forward Max Ramsden finished the afternoon with four goals from six marks and 13 disposals, with his marking and set shot goal kicking a particular highlight given the testing conditions.

Box Hill Coach Zane Littlejohn has provided his review of how each of the dozen AFL-listed Hawks fared in the clash.

Max Lynch (43 hit-outs, 18 disposals, 1 goal)

"Lynchy was extremely solid. His contest and clearance work, his ability to push forward and hit the scoreboard again, and his hit-outs were all really pleasing. To have some clearances himself was also really solid. He really worked his way into the game all day and didn’t have a quarter where he went missing. He gave us first use for the majority of the day, but what stood out to me was his leadership and ability to continue to connect the Box Hill and Hawthorn players. He is in some good form at the moment, he's just got to keep doing that to knock the door down to ideally play AFL footy."

Lachy Bramble (23 disposals, 1 goal, 6 marks)

"It was another solid game for Brambs – he looked really classy, he gave us some great offensive drive and used the ball really well in the conditions. He was really solid, and was able to hit the scoreboard off half-back while also winning our ball back in our back half to set up our offensive drive."

Sam Butler (20 disposals, 1 goal, 3 tackles)

"Butsy’s ability to get up the ground turn back into our forward half was really pleasing. We had a real emphasis on trying to bring some forward half pressure and he was able to provide a lot of that which was great. Again, he was able to hit the scoreboard himself too which was really nice to see. So another solid performance for Buts – he showed great love and leadership over the day as well."

Jacob Koschitzke (1 goal, 10 disposals)

"Kosi was able to take two contested marks in the conditions and provide a real focal point up forward. But more importantly there is some great vision of him just being able to scrap inside 50, smother and pressure and do all that which is key on a day like that. He was rewarded by hitting the scoreboard in the second quarter. I thought he pieced together another solid performance and it's a step in the right direction for him."

Max Ramsden (4 goals, 13 disposals, 8 hit-outs, 6 marks)

"Rama kicked four, which is a great reward for effort. His contested work and forward craft was again really pleasing, he was able to provide a contest up forward like Kosi and it was his turn to hit the scoreboard this week. He was really impressive. His ruck craft is his area of growth which he is open about, but one thing we know about Rama is his ability to work on his game and continue to become the best player he can. He puts in a lot of work with David Hale in the ruck and Keegan Brooksby as well. He’s on the right path – it was great to see him hit the scoreboard and develop his forward craft further which is nice."

James Blanck (15 disposals, 5 marks)

"Blancky was extremely solid down back – he did his job and had a good match up with Nathan Kreuger who returned from Collingwood so it was great for him to have a match up like that. Kreuger was their only genuine key forward so Blancky was challenged a little bit and had to play a bit smaller at times, which is great for his development. He was able to execute his role really well and I was pleased with how he was able to perform. His attitude and effort all day was very good."

Bailey Macdonald (15 disposals)

"Bailey played across half-back and had some really good moments where we were able to see his weapons – we saw him use his speed and side-step a few players. A really impressive thing for him this week was that he had a couple of strong contests over the ball. He was able to hold up despite having a lighter frame being a first-year draftee against some bigger Collingwood AFL/VFL listed players, which was really pleasing. He’s been really reliable in his role at the moment which is something we really like."

Josh Morris (11 disposals, 3 marks)

“Josh had a job in defence playing on Reef McInnes who made a return from AFL last week and was able to get that locked away and get some more continuity back in his body after playing two consecutive weeks with a six-day turn around which is great for him. He showed some really nice leadership across the day and some great offensive drive. Despite the conditions being wet and miserable, he was still able to have some good ball use off half-back while also getting his defensive job done as well which is really pleasing."

Josh Weddle (21 disposals, 4 marks)

"Joshy had a great return after missing last week with his ankle issue. He gave us some extremely good offensive drive with his run, dash and carry and his power. But then impressively his ability to compete one-on-one, he’s probably got to tidy that area up and find the balance of competing and defending one-on-one, but without losing his offensive drive which is what we love and want to see from him. But again it was a solid performance for him after a week out. We’ve seen some really exciting signs from him and I look forward to see what he can continue to develop and grow into."

Jack O'Sullivan  (1 goal, 16 disposals, 3 tackles)

"Sul was just an energy bunny all day – he was able get up the ground and get back inside 50 and provide pressure, hit the scoreboard which was really impressive. It was a really solid performance from him in those conditions. He looked lively when he was around the footy, his side-step and agility was really impressive. More importantly, his tackling pressure and the be almost a nuisance up forward was really pleasing."

Josh Bennetts (1 goal, 13 disposals)

"One of the things that stands out with Josh is his cleanliness and also his ability to keep his feet in the contest. On a day like that, where you’ve got a little excuse potentially if you went to ground, but he didn’t. He showed an ability to keep his feet and was strong over the ball, but then his cleanliness and trying to develop to be a 'one touch' player and not leave any opportunity out there is what he's working really hard on at the moment and he’s doing a really good job. His ability to hit the scoreboard and half and win contests is really impressive. He’s got to keep being consistent in this space now while he's got some bigger forwards up there to work off, he’s really relishing that opportunity. He’s doing a great job in that space."

Fionn O'Hara (11 disposals)

"Fionn had another great performance, we just got to keep remembering where this kids come from. He has been elite in the sport that he came from in his rugby and gaelic football back in Ireland. He had a bit of an interrupted year last year, but he has really grabbed the last two opportunities his had. We had the six day turnaround and he was a little bit crook during the week – so that’s another thing he can add to his kip bag, he was able to perform despite being under the weather a little bit. He was really reliable and played his role off the wing which was really impressive. He was clean and composed with the ball in hand, so it was a really impressive second game. for him Now his standard and expectation rises so he's just got to keep being consistent and reliable in whatever role he is given."

Damian Mascitti (24 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal)

"It was Damo’s second game back and he played on the wing pretty much all day, used the ball really well and was able to hit the scoreboard as well which was great. The thing that people forget about Damo is that he’s actually coaching our backline at the same time. So he’s got to balance out playing while also managing our backline thoughout the week and getting them set up. To do that all is a great effort and his performance is going along  nicely with it."

Max Hall (2 goals, 17 disposals, 4 marks)

"Maxy returned this week after missing since Sydney and was really impressive. He was Box Hill's best first year player last year and played as a high forward for us and was able to get back inside 50 and kick two early goals for us. He continues to grow his game and develop really nicely into that reliable player. We trust him in what role we give him and he's now been able to do that in Round 1 and Round 4. Just because we were healthy at AFL-level, he missed Round 3."

Box Hill return to action next Saturday at Coburg, with the first bounce is scheduled for 1.05pm.
