Hawthorn forward Chad Wingard is a chance to play this weekend despite suffering a lacerated tongue in a horror incident against GWS on Sunday.

The 29-year-old received a stray arm to the mouth in a marking contest late in the second term in the side's loss to the Giants in Adelaide and was flown home early to undergo surgery.

Hawthorn's High Performance Manager Peter Burge said Wingard's procedure on Monday went smoothly following the unlucky incident.

“He's obviously a little bit sore and there will be a little bit of recovery required after going under anaesthetic, but we'll get him going tomorrow and he'll aim to fully train this week," Burge said.

“We'll then assess his availability, but I would be pretty confident that he'll be playing football this weekend."

Burge also provided an update on Jack Scrimshaw who missed Sunday’s clash due to a toe injury.

“At the end of the week Jack flagged that his toe was quite sore,” Burge explained.

“He participated in some of our training session, but just didn't feel comfortable to push off and do all the things that he needs to do, so we made the call to not play him last weekend.

“We've got two training sessions coming up so we need to assess through those, but I anticipate he would be training and available if everything goes well."

Meanwhile in some exciting news, key forward Mitch Lewis is expected to be available next week for the Round 7 clash against the Western Bulldogs in what would be his first game of 2023.
