Tamara Smith has put pen to paper on a new contract extension with the Hawks, which will see her remain in the brown and gold until at least the end of 2026.

An inaugural Hawk, Smith was recruited to Hawthorn as an expansion signing ahead of Season 7 (2022). She lined up in the Hawks first game against Essendon at Marvel Stadium and has since played 19 of a possible 20 games for the club.

The 24-year-old is well regarded for her tackling pressure and fearless nature, having won the club’s Most Courageous award for two straight seasons.

In her maiden AFLW season Smith averaged 10.3 disposals from 10 appearances, highlighting her ball-winning ability. She also averaged 8.1 tackles for the season, ranking fifth overall league-wide, and laid the equal most tackles in a debut AFLW season with 81.

The 2023 season saw Smith shift to half-back, where she applied her football IQ, running ability and aggression to master the role. She managed 8.9 disposals and 5.3 tackles per game for the season.

Hawthorn AFLW List Manager Keegan Brooksby said Smith's re-signing was a valuable one.

“We’re thrilled to have Tamara recommit to the Hawks for another two years,” Brooksby said.

“Since being picked up from Geelong VFLW in 2022, Tamara has exemplified the Hawthorn values and has given her all at every opportunity.

“Tamara is a ferocious presence across the ground, known for her tackling ability and is always courageous in her approach.

“Tam is another important piece of our group as we continue to solidify this exciting phase in our preparations for season 2024 and beyond.”

The countdown is on, with Hawthorn set to host Carlton in the opening round of the 2024 AFLW season on Sunday 1 September at Kinetic Stadium, Frankston.
