A comeback of “real character”
Carlton burst out of the blocks on Sunday, creating a four-goal lead at the first change before extending out to a 31-point buffer at half-time. Hawthorn appeared on the ropes at the main change, after managing just three goals in the opening half. But the Hawks fought back, kicking five of the six third quarter goals. Piling on another five goals in the final term, Alastair Clarkson’s side registered its third win of the year as the coach credited the team’s “endeavour and personal pride”.
O’Meara dominance
Jaeger O’Meara was already enjoying a career-best year in 2019, but on Sunday he took it to another level. The 25-year-old smashed his previous career-high of 36 disposals, recording 42 touches in a game-defining performance against the Blues. The midfielder was industrious in a complete four-quarter performance that included a career-best 23 contested possessions and a goal. O’Meara is now averaging 30.8 possessions, 7.4 tackles and a goal per game through his five outings in 2019.

Shiels and Stratton return
Alastair Clarkson cited the influence of senior players in the Hawks second-half revival against Carlton. In his return from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for three weeks, Liam Shiels was pivotal in the win, recording 26 possessions, nine tackles and three goals. His experience inside the contest proved invaluable for a midfield that has been rocked by injury in the opening stages of the season. And, whilst not owning as impressive a stat line, Ben Stratton was also a welcome addition to the side’s defensive end.
Tassie hot streak continues
The Hawks couldn’t feel more comfortable at their second home UTAS Stadium. The win over the Blues has now extended Hawthorn’s record to 32 wins and a draw from its last 36 appearances in Launceston and 46 wins and a draw from its 60 outings all-time. The Hawks will return to the venue in Round 10 when they take on Port Adelaide on May 25.
