Jarryd Roughead will officially hang up the boots this week following a fairy-tale farewell at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

After booting six goals in Hawthorn’s win over the Gold Coast Suns, Roughead and the club have decided the veteran forward will not make the trip to Perth for the Hawks’ Round 23 clash.

GM – Football Graham Wright said that after discussion with Roughead both parties agreed that Sunday’s match was the perfect note for the 32-year-old to finish his career on.

“Sunday’s match could not have been any more of a fairy-tale finish for Rough,” said Wright.

“He was able to wind back the clock and provide his teammates, family and our supporters with a pretty special memory.

“Rough has made the call to officially hang up the boots this week, but he will remain a part of the squad for as long as our 2019 season is alive. 

“Rough is a champion of our football club and we are incredibly proud of the way in which he has finished up his career in the brown and gold.”

Roughead said that having put everything into last Sunday’s performance, he felt his body was not up to a six-day break and trip to Perth. 

“You honestly could not have written a better script than the way things panned out on Sunday,” said Roughead.

“That being the case, I’ve made the call to officially hang them up. This week is a big game for the footy club and like all Hawthorn fans, I’ll be sitting back and hoping for another fairy-tale result for the brown and gold this weekend. 

“I’d like to thank everyone for making Sunday so special. The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible and I’ll cherish the memories forever.”
