Presenting Blast from the Past!

Over the month of September, we will be taking you on a trip down memory lane as we look back at various moments in Hawthorn history that have occurred on the same date.

Today we rewind back to 1925…

The excitement of Hawthorn entering the VFL in 1925 was quickly met with a much more pessimistic emotion as the season got underway.

One of three new clubs to the competition – the others being North Melbourne and Footscray, the Mayblooms, as they were known, did not bloom whatsoever.

Hawthorn lost 11 of its opening 12 games, with the might of the already-powerful Geelong, Essendon, Melbourne and Collingwood sides proving well ahead of Hawthorn’s level.

The Mayblooms’ season finished off on a slightly more positive note, winning two of its final five games.

The second victory of this period came on this day 94 years ago.

The reality of this form was that it was a precursor for what was to come for the club over the next three decades.

The club wouldn’t make its first finals series until 1957 – thankfully a distant memory for the club.
