Hawthorn’s VFLW team has gone back-to-back, defeating Williamstown at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday.

Despite a late surge from the Seagulls in the last quarter, Hawthorn came away nine-point victors and secured its
second win of the season.

The Hawks got off to a promising start with Meg Hutchins blasting through the Seagulls defence to score the first major of the game.

Sarah Perkins, who returned to the team for her first game of the season, registered the Hawks’ second goal, making good use of a free kick and 50 metre penalty.

The scoreboard was levelled by Williamstown ahead of the first break, after the Hawks gave up two free kicks in front of the opposition’s goals.

The contest was back and forth in the second term, both teams fumbling with the ball and unable to get scoring opportunities.

It was an incredible sequence from Hawks’ experienced players Phoebe McWilliams, Hutchins and Rebecca Beeson that resulted in a goal and reignited the Hawks’ momentum.

Hawthorn kept the Seagulls scoreless in the second quarter and had a nine-point lead at half time.

The third quarter saw the ball stay in Hawthorn’s forward 50, but the girls were struggling to get through the middle sticks.

Beeson decided to the take the game on and came through the forward line with an explosive goal, her second of the day.

The Hawks had the momentum and looked good heading into the final quarter, but Williamstown weren’t ready to give up.

Late goals from Sharnie Whiting and Moana Hope gave the Hawks a scare, but it was too late for the Seagulls with Hawthorn’s early lead helping them seal the win at 4.11 (35) to 4.2 (26).

The Hawks will now look forward to a week off and will be back on Saturday, 15th June, to face Essendon at Windy Hill.
