Hawthorn’s VFLW team has finished its first block of the season with a win/loss record of 2-2, something that assistant coach Brett Alexander says was a goal for the club.
“We set the goal of trying to make sure we squared the ledger going into the bye,” explained Alexander.
“It gives us a chance to reload for the next block, keep correcting the things we want to get better at, so yeah we will definitely take two and two.”
The Hawks had a slow start to their season losing their first two games to sides that made finals in 2018, the Northern Territory and Collingwood.
Since then they have been able to get their season back on track with wins against Darebin and Williamstown.
The Round 4 game against the Seagulls was a tough win for the Hawks, with Williamstown playing a physical and contested style of game.
“They played a few tags on our players today, so we were really happy that some of our girls were able to manage those tags.
“Hutchy (Meg Hutchins) was fantastic, she had a hard tag on her all day.
“They (Williamstown) didn’t allow us to play the sort of style of footy that we wanted but we were able to cope with that and get away with the win.”
With a bye in Round 5 the girls will have an opportunity to refresh and rejuvenate with a week away from the club.
“We’re going to do a review Monday night at Waverley, and then with the bye we will let the girls have a bit of a break so go away recharge the batteries.
“I think we have a block of six games coming up after the bye, so the focus next week will be more of a mental break.
“Then we’ll come back and try and get in front of the ledger so we’re 3-2 the week after.”
The Hawks next game will be in Round 6 against Essendon on Saturday June 15 at Windy Hill at 11.30am.
