Hawthorn’s VFLW side has put themselves back on the winner’s list defeating Richmond by 13 points at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday.
In what was a fiery contest all day, the Hawks got the lead early in the first quarter and kept it for the rest of the game, securing their win at 7.9 (51) to 6.2 (38).
The Tigers started off fast with Grace Egan registering the first goal of the day after a 50m penalty landed her in the goal square.
Phoebe McWilliams, who had stellar day out and was named best on ground, responded quickly and kicked back-to-back goals.
With a one point lead at quarter time, the Hawks had all the momentum and took this into the second quarter, where they were able to use this intensity to shut down the opposition’s defence.
McWilliams, who continued to be a strong force up forward, slotted her third goal, followed by one from Rosie Dillon, who was able to break her way through the Tigers defence and push the Hawks’ lead out to 16 points at the major break.
Having been kept scoreless for the second quarter, Richmond came out after half time reenergised and the play was even, with both sides kicking two goals a piece.
Sarah Perkins booted her first of the day and Dillon, once again showed off her quick skills to get her second.
The last term was a tight contest with only 16 points the difference and with both sides fighting to get over the line.
Richmond gave the Hawks a scare with a goal from Sabrina Frederick bringing them to within 12 points, but it was a fourth and final goal from McWilliams that gave the Hawks fans a sigh of relief with only minutes left.
The Tigers kicked one more before the final siren, but it wasn’t enough and Hawthorn ran away as victors.
The Hawks will now have a week off and will return on Sunday, 4th August, to face Melbourne University.
