In the last round of the VFLW season, Hawthorn’s side has gone down by 15 points to Collingwood on Saturday at Box Hill City Oval.
The strong winds set up a scoring end for the day with the Hawks kicking with the wind for the first quarter.
The home side came out strong and had control of the game. After a few missed attempts, Sarah Perkins booted a huge kick from 55 metres out that dropped out the back of the opposition and dribbled through for Hawthorn’s first major.
After being kept scoreless for the twenty minutes, Maddie Shevlin was able to sneak in a goal after the siren to put the Pies to within two points at the first break.
Collingwood came out after quarter time kicking with the wind and used this to their advantage, registering three straight goals. The Hawks struggled up forward and were kept goalless, leaving the Pies 17 points ahead at half time.
The start of third quarter saw the Pies keep their momentum and put two more majors on the scoreboard, before Meg Hutchins stopped their goal streak and slotted one for the home side.
This goal set up a momentum switch and the Hawks started firing back, Perkins hitting the scoreboard for the second time, bringing the difference back to just 14 points at the final break.
It was an intense final quarter that saw the ball make its way back and forth. Hawthorn’s hopes at winning were increased when Perkins came out and slotted her third for the day and bringing them to within seven points.
This excitement didn’t last long with Bec Grant responding quickly for the Pies and kicking the game sealing goal with Collingwood running away victors at 7.4 (46) to 4.7 (31).
With this loss Hawthorn’s season is most likely over with a slim chance of making it to finals if Melbourne University lose to the NT Thunder tomorrow.
