This Sunday, two sides from the same club will contest the VFL and VFLW Grand Finals for the first time in history.

The Hawthorn women’s team will kick off the action at 12.30pm at Etihad Stadium (now known as Marvel Stadium), followed by the Box Hill men at 3.20pm. 

The VFLW side has enjoyed a dream run in the second half of the season, beating top four teams NT Thunder, Geelong and Collingwood in consecutive weeks.

After earning a week off with a Qualifying Final win, the girls are refreshed and ready to face Geelong in Sunday’s decider. 

While the side will be without Mel Kuys (achilles) and Dianna Haines (medial ligament), they will be buoyed by the return of exciting youngsters Olivia Flanagan and Emily Gilder.

The Box Hill men have taken a different path to the Grand Final stage, finishing in sixth on the VFL ladder and having to fight it out the hard way.

Their elimination final was full of excitement, as an Oliver Hanrahan equaliser took things into extra time before the Hawks eventually locked in the win. 

After a convincing Semi Final victory over Geelong, their preliminary final clash again went down to the wire, as Box Hill edged out Williamstown by a single point.

The Hawks will come up against pace-setters Casey this Sunday at Marvel Stadium, with the winner to be crowned 2018 VFL premiers.

Box Hill’s line up will include a host of AFL talent, including James Worpel, Conor Nash and David Mirra, each returning from stints at senior level.
