After losing their previous two games, the Box Hill Hawks re-joined the winners list, defeating Frankston by 63 points at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday.
The Hawks led all day and, had it not been for some wayward kicking in front of goal (15.21), the margin could have easily extended into triple-digit territory.
Coach Chris Newman was proud of his side’s response to a recent poor run that had seen the brown and gold register just one win from four weeks.

James Cousins
37 disposals, 4 marks, 5 tackles, 2 goals
“He had an outstanding game. He kicked 2 goals and actually had multiple other opportunities. Among his possessions, he’s had 11 inside 50s, eight clearances and 17 contested possessions. So, he has played a bloody good game! It was one of those games where the conditions weren’t too bad, we didn’t get hit with the rain too much. But it was pretty slippery conditions but he held up really well in the midfield.” CN
Kieran Lovell
29 disposals, 4 marks, 1 goal
“He looked really dynamic and quick in congestion. He covered the ground quite well. He played with a real intent both offensively and defensively. So, there were some good numbers for him. He played on-ball and forward, with a pretty even split between the two, so they were good numbers considering he got a fair bit of the ball as a forward.” CN
Dallas Willsmore
26 disposals, 8 marks, 2 tackles
“He played on the wing again. We probably burnt him quite a bit, he was free on quite a few occasions when we were entering forward 50 but we just didn’t connect with him. So, he could have ended up with a couple of goals against his name. We like him kicking the footy inside 50 and he had six inside 50s. So, his patterns are really good and his help for the defence was also terrific.” CN
Teia Miles
25 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal
“Teia played down back and he just did what he usually does. He is so shifty and hard to negate as an opposition player. He creates so much instability with the footy. When he uses the ball at 90% efficiency as he did, with the way he plays, that’s a great return in a day that wasn’t really conducive to that dry weather footy style. He turned it into that sort of game. He kicked a goal as well from half-back.” CN
Jono O’Rourke
23 disposals, 5 marks
“O’Rourke played half-back for the first time. I thought he did pretty well. He used the ball well by foot, going at 90%. So, playing in defence is something that we might look to explore. He has the ability to go through all lines but this was something a bit new to him. So, hopefully he can keep giving this sort of return to us.” CN
David Mirra
20 disposals, 7 marks, 1 tackle
“Mirra had a really solid game. He played on Corey Rich, who is their leading goalkicker and equal second in the league. So, he is quite dangerous and a pretty crafty player. ‘Miz’ had the job on him and I thought he did a really good job. The best thing about his game was his defensive intent and his aggression at the opposition. But he also took five marks from the opposition’s boot so he read the ball really well. He was one of our better defenders on the day.” CN
James Worpel
20 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal
“He again played that half-forward and on-ball role. We tried to get him a bit more on-ball exposure. He was ripping through stoppages like a man possessed. He is pretty hard to tackle when he gets on the move, he has a pretty good stiff arm on him. So, he aimed to go through the ball with some strong intent and momentum, which I think he did well.” CN
Olly Hanrahan
19 disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 1 goal
“He played majority forward with a little bit on-ball. He looked quite dynamic and moved well.” CN
Conor Nash
19 disposals, 7 marks, 3 tackles, 1 goal
“Nash played the first half on the wing, as a big-bodied wingman, and then, with Schoenmakers going out of the game in the second half, he went forward in the second half. He probably impacted in both positions. I think he had 10 possessions at half-time and finished with 19. So, he has had a pretty good, even contribution across the four quarters and he finished with a goal.” CN
Brendan Whitecross
18 disposals, 6 marks
“His voice is really important for us and he provided some really good offensive drive, when he used his legs. He looked quite quick off the half-back line. He had five rebound 50s, which is strong. He just provides that leadership wherever he goes, he has been playing across all lines every week. But his ability to adjust wherever he is has been outstanding.” CN
Harrison Jones
17 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles
“Harry Jones played half-back again and provided us with a handball receive target. He looked really quick. Kicking is something he has been working on and he has finished with a 78% efficiency, so he used the ball well. He took a couple of marks from the opposition’s boot as well, which is important for our defenders, and he killed a few other contests too. He is probably getting a little bit high up the ground, like he is getting a little bit aggressive with his positioning, but we’d rather him be that way rather than be the other way and be a bit gun-shy. So, we like the attack he brings to our backline.” CN
Marc Pittonet
17 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 47 hit-outs
“Another solid game in terms of his ruckwork and the seven tackles were impressive as well, we love that about him. The other pleasing thing is his 17 disposals, which is a really good result to have a big fella who can connect around the ground. Hopefully we can continue this sort of form.” CN
Kurt Heatherley
16 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle
“In his third game back from injury, it looked like he was reading the game a lot better. He provided some really strong spoiling from the defensive end. He plays at his best when he is playing aggressive and he toes the line between going over the top and being controlled. So, hopefully he too can continue with that form.” CN
Conor Glass
14 disposals, 7 marks
“It wasn’t a high disposal count for Conor, but I thought he used the ball quite well. He was critical of his own game but I thought he used the ball and set us up quite well throughout the day. He feels like he has got a bit of room for improvement, which he obviously does, but it was a pretty solid effort.” CN
Jackson Ross
14 disposals, 7 marks, 1 tackle, 2 goals
“Another good game from Rossy. He probably missed a couple of goals that he should have got as well. So, he could have quite easily ended up with three or four. He won some pivotal one-on-one battles in the air and he is looking quite strong with his contested marking at the moment, which is good. He is showing some really good signs.” CN
Dylan Moore
13 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle
“Dylan Moore played his first game since Round 2. He played three quarters of the game in his return. He connected well, playing on the wing.” CN
Tim O’Brien
12 disposals, 5 marks, 2 tackles, 2 goals
“He probably played better as the game went on. We didn’t help with our inside 50 connection though, we’ve had 73 inside 50s but we just didn’t connect as well as we could have and didn’t finish our work. He took a couple of big marks and as the game went on, he looked like he was running and jumping at it well. He went in the ruck a little bit, where he can run and jump and get over the top of some other ruckmen. Again, he missed a couple of shots at goal that he would normally get.” CN
Mitchell Lewis
11 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 2 goals
“Mitch kicked 2.1, so he continues to get his few shots at goal each game. He created a great contest for us and four tackles is a good return for him also.” CN
Ryan Schoenmakers
4 disposals, 1 mark, 2 tackles
“He only played the half. He halved a lot of contests. We were a little bit clunky with our ball movement in the first half and probably played our better footy in the second half, which was a shame he wasn’t out there for that. We were just managing him with his injury but hopefully he can play again this week and get some more game time.” CN
