The Rundown
Celebrating Alastair Clarkson’s 300th game as coach in Round 18, the Hawks continued their recent dominance over the Dockers, claiming their tenth win from the sides’ previous 11 encounters with a 52-point victory.
Jumping out of the blocks, the Hawks kicked the first four goals of the game, moving the ball with speed and precision before a pair of late Fremantle goals reigned in their lead to 15 points at quarter time.
The Dockers got to within eight points early in the second term but it was as close as they would get as the Hawks increased their lead at every change, with the margin blowing out after a six goal to two final quarter.
Midfielder Tom Mitchell was again prolific through the middle of the ground with 37 disposals, while debutant Conor Glass also looked composed in defence with a 15-disposal performance.
The Star
Jack Gunston enjoyed a stellar night, amassing a career-high 35 disposals at more than 91% efficiency in his new rebounding role across halfback.
Gunston took eight marks and managed to also kick a goal, receiving two Brownlow votes for his performance.
The Moment
Down by 28 points at three quarter time, Fremantle had any chance of a late fightback snuffed out early in the last quarter.
As the Dockers looked to bring the ball forward off halfback, small forward Michael Walters limped from the ground with a knee injury which allowed the Hawks to incept and feed the ball out to the running Jack Gunston who goaled from right on 50 to all but seal the game.
The Coach
“We just slowly broke them down. It took a long time, but it was really pleasing the way we ran out the game and had a pleasing victory in the end having won all four quarters, which is hard to do when you play Freo over here.”
