The Hawks’ VFLW team is preparing to make history, becoming the first ever Hawthorn women’s team to feature in a finals series.
The side finished its home and away season in the best way possible, with a big win over the Cats to lock the double chance.
Perfect weather conditions, rival clubs, with both teams vying for a top two finish, Saturday’s contest was as big a home-and-away game as they come.
The Cats were first to hit the scoreboard, as Madeline Keryk kicked cleanly to reward their quick ball movement and attacking pressure.
It wasn’t long before the Hawks replied, as Rosie Dillon kicked the first goal for the home side to level the scores at the first break.
The Hawks arrested momentum in the second term as Sarah Perkins, Clare Dyett and Rebecca Beeson kicked repeat goals for the home side.
A major from Kate Darby saw the Cats keep themselves in contention, and they trailed by just 14-points at half time.
The third quarter highlighted composure and strong defensive skills from the Hawks who prevented the Cats from impacting the scoreboard.
Following last week’s stellar performance, Rebecca Beeson was again impressive as she booted her second goal to set the stage for a big finish.
The Cats performed in a resilient final quarter but struggled to capitalize on goal opportunities.
Geelong’s finals efforts were rewarded with a goal from Mia-Rae Clifford from a set shot.
Perkins continued to impress, adding another goal to her tally, just minutes before the final result was sealed 6.5(41) to 3.7(25).
The Hawks will enjoy a well-deserved rest this weekend, before playing Collingwood at North Port Oval, on Saturday 8 September as they kick off the 2018 VFLW Finals Series.
