4.30pm – We’re at the ‘G, ready to take on the fifth placed Eagles, and to tell you the truth – it’s nerve racking.
The Hawks are staring down a 0-5 start for the first time since 1970. The media are circling like seagulls, waiting (praying) for the Hawks to fall, and too be honest – we’re just not sure how many more “Long way to the top” and “Flawthorn” gags we can handle.
It’s time to say “see ya later Owen” and get those four points on the board.
4.40pm – First bounce time. Let’s rock.
Q1 03:41 – GOAL! Punky gets the first of the game. That settles the nerves a bit.
Q 11:55 – The ball spills to ground inside our 50. Silk does Silk, and passes off a silky handball to Gunners as he runs into an open goal square.
We’ve got our second!!
Okay, keeping a lid on it. Lots of footy left to play.
QT – We head into the first break with an eight-point lead. I don’t want to jinx things, but the boys a looking the goods.
Q2 04:11 – Cyril intercepts Gaff’s handball, shakes the tackle and sends the ball flying inside 50. The boys are all there- will it be Roughy? Gunners? Silk?
Not this time. CYRIL bursts out of nowhere to collect his own ball and dish off the perfect hand pass to Sis in the open goal square.
The magic man has sent a resounding message to his recent media critics:
Q2 09:23 – The wonderful golden fist of Gibbo’s is making an epic comeback today! He punches one to advantage, Punky collects, and send its sailing through the middle sticks.
Chuck Norris approves.
Q2 16:04 – Jack Darling puts his hands square in Kaiden Brand’s back and shoves him to ground before turning and kicking for home.
Obviously it will be a free kick. Obviously……… It’s a goal.
We’ll let the fans do the talking here: Good call, bad call?
HT – Okay, moving on.
The Hawks are up by 27 points. Hitting ‘em where it hurts – on the scoreboard.
Q3 08:01 – T.O!!!! Way to go! He hit ‘em really hard and sent them down below! (That sounds oddly familiar…)
Our young fiery-headed forward takes a huge grab and punishes West Coast with yet another straight kick.
LID IS OFF.
3QT: The Hawks will head into the last with a 31-point lead. The win is so close we can almost taste it.
Q4 04:53 – Cyril does some incredible tap work in Shiels’ favour. Pup kicks it long and…. it hits Roughy on the chest!
The big man is lining up for goal number 500!
HE’S GOT IT! THE BIG ROUGH HAS KICKED HIS 500TH GOAL! THE CROWD GOES WILD!
FT: What a day, huh? I doubt any of the 28,000 Hawks fans who rocked up (including a few at home that may be slightly disappointed they jumped off the wagon so quickly) have any voices left.
Roughy brought tears to our eyes, Cyril was back to his magical self (how 'bout that nutmeg through Duggan's legs?!), and the Hawks are now on the board.
Catch ya later Owen. I would say it was nice knowing you, but, well, you know…
Keep celebrating Hawks fans, it’s all up from here!
