Hawthorn vice-captain Liam Shiels is set to play his 150th game for Hawthorn against Brisbane on Saturday.
Taken with the 34th pick in the 2008 National Draft, Shiels has since led an illustrious career, highlighted by his three premiership medallions in 2013, 2014, 2015.
Having been the youngest player taken in his draft, Shiels was not expected to play in his first year, instead only training part-time whilst he completed his schooling at Aquinas College in Melbourne.
Nevertheless, after some strong performances playing for Box Hill, Shiels forced his way into senior selection and was chosen to debut in Round 10 2009 against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium (pictured).
An underrated player outside Hawthorn, Shiels has built a reputation within his club for his leadership, hard-running and tackling ability.Shiels’ career has been highlighted by his part in the Hawks’ historical premiership hat-trick throughout a period in which he played 60 games to prove a vital member of the club’s successful dynamic.
Shiels led the Hawks for total tackles in each of the past three seasons, averaging 7.3 tackles per game over that time.
The Eastern Ranges product becomes the 64th player to play 150 games for Hawthorn.
Shiels has a 72.5 per cent winning record at Hawthorn, and he will be looking to boost this percentage when the Hawks face Brisbane in his milestone match on Saturday.
