Opting for experience, the Hawks added four premiership players to their Round 14 line up before crossing the border to take on the first-placed Crows.

Alastair Clarkson’s bold selection moves seemingly paid off, with the Hawks pulling off an upset victory over the premiership favourites.

One of Clarkson’s inclusions was 2015 premiership player Ryan Schoenmakers, who hadn’t been seen at AFL level since the Hawks’ Round 1 loss to Essendon.

The 26-year-old utility took no time adjusting to the change of pace, finding himself lining up for a set shot just six minutes into the first quarter. 

Although hopes of a fairy tale return faded as the kick drifted left, Schoenmakers continued to provide a strong contest all night, showing he’s still got what it takes to perform at AFL level.

“I’ve got to admit, I was out of my legs a little at the end of the last quarter,” Schoenmakers said after the match. 

“It’s definitely a step up from the pace of VFL, but nothing I’m not used to so I knew what to expect coming in.”

While his hopes for an AFL return never wavered, Schoenmakers admits he has been enjoying his time at VFL level this season.

“The goal was always to get back into the side, but Box Hill have been great. 

“I love it down there. The boys are having a great year so far, so hopefully they can keep that rolling. 

“Newy [VFL Coach Chris Newman] has come in and done a fantastic job.”
