Parkin was inducted to Legend status in the Hawthorn Hall of Fame in 2013, having played 211 games and coached 94 games at Hawthorn.
Playing mainly as a back-pocket specialist, his football abilities were matched by great courage.
During his five-year stint as captain of the club from 1969-73, Parkin led the Hawks to their second VFL premiership in 1971.
Having retired in 1975, having finished his career after one year captain-coaching Subiaco in the WAFL, Parkin returned to the Hawks to be an assistant coach in 1976, before being promoted to the head job in 1977.
Parkin was lauded for his analytical approach to his coaching, coupled with his genuine care for the welfare of his players throughout his coaching career.
His impact on the art of coaching is considered to have revolutionised the role that a coach can play in a team’s pursuit of glory.
