After spending the entire 2016 season on the sidelines, Jarryd Roughead’s return to football was one of the game’s feel-good stories of the year.
The 30-year old was also named captain of Hawthorn in January, signifying how important his return to the club was.
The skipper thrived this year, kicking the most goals for the club while also registering the second highest yearly disposal average of his career (17.8 possessions).
Roughead was clearly the Hawks’ number one attacking target this year.
Along with booting the most goals, he also took nearly 20 more marks inside 50 than the next best option (Roughead 46, Luke Breust 27).
A word from: Adem Yze
“Roughy’s season, having come back from what he has had to deal with, I thought he just got better and better as the season went on.
“He’s obviously learning a new leadership role, so he’s been dealing with that as well as obviously trying to get back into the form that we know he is capable of.
“His ability to go into centre bounces and help out when needed there was great. I think the timing of his marking and contested footy in our front end really started to shine as the season went on.
“So, hopefully another big preseason for Rough, which will see him get right back to where he was.”
