BOX Hill coach Marco Bello and Hawthorn’s Head of Development Academy Rob McCartney review every Hawthorn-listed player’s performance in the Hawks’ 22-point win over Sandringham on Saturday, keeping Box Hill in the hunt for finals.

VFL

ALEX WOODWARD – 29 disposals, seven marks, one goal

“Finished with 29 disposals but had 19 of those in the first half and 13 of those in the first quarter. He was prolific early and started to garner the attention of the opposition with a tag in the second half. While he didn’t get as many disposals in the second half he was still really influential with clearances and finished with a goal.” MB

JONO O’ROURKE – 19 disposals, six inside 50s

“A similar pattern to Alex – really influential early and finished with 20 disposals and a really good balance of inside and outside possessions. Jono is a terrific ball-user and runs and carries which is a great asset. Finished with six inside 50s, three of those score assists which again is great for a midfielder.” MB

TIM O’BRIEN – 15 disposals, seven marks, three goals

“His first week back at VFL level after a stint in the AFL side and he was certainly our most dangerous tall forward. Tim was flying for everything and probably wasn’t clunking them early, but after quarter time we were really impressed with his ability to take marks in contested situations which resulted in shots on goal. Finished with 3.2, and it’s good that he can come back and have a strong influence on the game – that’s really important for his development.” RM

KURT HEATHERLEY – 16 disposals, seven marks

“Kurt had a good, balanced game. Rarely gets beaten defensively, and I thought all of our defenders but particularly Kurt and Gus (Litherland) were able to thwart a lot of the forward thrusts from Sandringham. He continues to put on really good defensive pressure and takes marks from opposition kicks going back the other way.” MB

KADE STEWART – 13 disposals, four marks, two goals

“Kade was in the game early with two shots on goal in the first quarter. He’s an interesting matchup up forward because he can take a strong mark in front of a pack and he’s quite good overhead. Had four shots on goal this week, but probably just needs to improve his conversion with a couple of set shots which were in front that he should kick. We’re looking for him to finish off a reasonably consistent year.” RM

MARC PITTONET – 16 disposals, 20 hit outs, six marks

“Pitto had a really strong game. He had 14 touches but more pleasing for him was his ability to take six marks across the day – three of those contested. He gave us a get out option on a number of occasions which was really pleasing. We’ve been really happy with his ruckwork – he’s been doing a lot of work on that with Damien Monkhorst in the ruck department – and he finished with 20 hit outs and three clearances.” MB

JACK FITZPATRICK – 10 disposals, four marks, two goals

“We played with three talls this week so he had to share a bit of the footy with the other talls which is why his numbers weren’t as high as previous weeks. He was a good role player for us in a number of areas – up forward where he kicked a couple of goals and he went into the ruck and significantly had an influence on the game. Also played a role in defence when the opposition had some taller forwards.” RM

RYAN SCHOENMAKERS – eight disposals, one goal

“Just great to have Schoey back and involved after a lengthy time in rehab. What we noticed is that he’s moving really freely which is the important thing at the moment. It was great to see him moving across the park really comfortably and got involved in a number of forward 50 entries and influenced our scoring. Only played 56% game time but we’ll see more of him in the coming weeks.” RM

ZAC WEBSTER – 11 disposals, five marks, one goal

“Zac started the game with a fair bit of the footy, showed he was really clean at ground level and in the air. As in previous weeks, he faded from the game in the middle part and was unlucky to get a fair crack on the nose in the third term which broke his nose and spent some time off the ground. Had a couple of shots but we need to get a more even contribution from Zac throughout the game.”

ANGUS LITHERLAND – 13 disposals

“Provided some real offensive drive from our back half. He had to play on tall players at times and he did that really well. The good thing about Gus is he’s an experienced campaigner at VFL level and he really led our defensive six with his voice, leadership and his ability to play on a range of opponents.” MB

KIERAN LOVELL – 14 disposals

“A quieter day for Kieran this week but he’s had a really good month of football. Finished with 16 disposals but when he gets the footy he has a burst of speed, really quick hands and even though he’s had a low-possession game, I thought his touches were valuable and helped us keep the ball in our half for long periods.” MB

DALLAS WILLSMORE – 12 disposals, eight rebound 50s

“A new role for Dallas this week, playing predominantly back this week. We have used him there before in periods throughout games this year but he played through there the whole game this week. He provides us with offensive impact but also performed some really strong defensive acts that were able to stop Sandringham getting more shots on goal.” MB

BLAKE HARDWICK – 10 disposals

“Blake’s numbers were a little down this week, finishing with 10 disposals. He provides some good defensive pressure in our front half, but we’d like to see him get a bit more of the footy. He had two shots on goal for 1.1, but going forward we need to see Blake influencing the game a bit more so he can finish the season on a high.” RM

LUKE SURMAN – four disposals

“A quiet day for Luke. He started the game with a really good contested mark, but we just didn’t get enough from him in contested marking situations. He’s a first year player so he’s still learning his craft, it’s often what you get with first year players that you get some good weeks and others where there is room for improvement.” RM

DEVELOPMENT

LACHLAN LANGFORD

“Was probably the best of our players at Development level this week. Lachie was able to win a bit more of the ball, finishing with 16 disposals and was a significant lead-up option between the arcs for us. Kicked a goal and we were really impressed with his foot skills this week.” RM

JERMAINE MILLER-LEWIS

“Had some scoreboard impact and finished the day with two goals. Probably didn’t find as much of the footy as last week when he kicked five goals, but he still provided some good defensive pressure in our forward half and created a couple of turnovers.” RM

CONOR GLASS

“Kicked his first goal in VFL Development football which was terrific. He just goes about his business, plays predominantly across half back, reads the ball really well, has great skills for a guy who hasn’t played a lot of footy and is still learning the caper.” MB
