The Form
The Swans have showed they are a force to be reckoned with in 2016, brushing aside a Geelong outfit which is also viewed as a genuine premiership threat.
The big pillars of the Swans’ midfield stood up, with Mitchell, Hannebery, Parker, Kennedy and Jack collecting 139 disposals, 25 clearances and five goals between them.
Sydney also shared the goal kicking load, with 11 goal kickers on the night showing they don’t necessarily need Lance Franklin kicking a bag of goals to win games.
The Hawks produced one of their best performances for the year against Port Adelaide last Thursday night, winning by 22 points in what was a physical and fiery encounter.
Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis and Sam Mitchell led the disposal count for the Hawks, while Cyril Rioli and Jack Gunston kicked three goals apiece.
The Hawthorn defence also took some great strides forward, with Josh Gibson, James Frawley and Kaiden Brand teaming together to nullify the Power’s tall forwards.
Stats That Matter
The ruck combination of Ben McEvoy and Jonathon Ceglar really clicked against the Power, particularly in the third term when the Hawks got on top of the Power.
The Hawks ended up winning the clearances 41-33, and if they can replicate this effort against the Swans they will give themselves every chance of winning the game.
Key Player
Paul Puopolo has had a great year, and continued his good form against the Power last week with 14 touches, seven tackles and two goals. The Hawks will be hoping for a repeat performance this week.
It’s A Big Week For…
James Sicily kicked one goal against the Power last week, but was well held for most of the night. His pairing with Jack Gunston will be critical to the Hawks’ fortunes against the Swans.
Odd Fact
Luke Hodge has collected more disposals against Sydney than any other team, collecting 482 disposals in 23 games.
Final Thoughts
This is a huge game for the Hawks – win, and a top-two finish is in their own hands.
