The Changes
Hawthorn will go in unchanged for tomorrow's blockbuster clash with West Coast. Meanwhile, the Eagles have made two changes to their line-up with Lewis Jetta and Jackson Nelson coming into the side for Thomas Barrass (Leg) and Simon Tunbridge (Suspension).
The Form
The Hawks bounced back in emphatic style last week against North Melbourne with a 39-point victory which keeps them at the top of the ladder for another week.
Hawthorn’s midfield in particular was devastating, with Sam Mitchell, Isaac Smith, Bradley Hill, Jordan Lewis and Luke Hodge combining for a total of 152 disposals.
Jack Gunston was quiet last week but it was the small forwards in Rioli, Breust and Puopolo who kicked half of the Hawks’ goals last week.
West Coast snuck over the line against GWS last week thanks to a Nic Naitanui miracle goal with just seconds left in the game.
The Eagles look like a different side with the ruckman’s return, and they now have legitimate claims of hosting a final in the first week of September if results fall their way.
Luke Shuey, Matthew Priddis and Andrew Gaff all had terrific games last week, so the Hawks’ midfield will need to fire once again.
Stats That Matter
The Hawks had 10 goal kickers last week against North Melbourne as opposed to just five the week before in the loss to Melbourne. Finding multiple avenues to goal is vital.
Key Player
Along with Josh Gibson and James Frawley, Kaiden Brand will need to play a role on one of West Coast’s dangerous forwards.
It’s A Big Week For…
Jack Gunston kicked one goal last week against the Kangaroos, but was otherwise well held by Robbie Tarrant for the second time in 2016. He will be looking to hit the scoreboard more regularly against the Eagles this week.
Odd Fact
The seven AFL debutants that Hawthorn has had in 2016 is the equal-second highest number in the Clarkson-era. The highest number was ten in Clarkson’s first year in 2005.
Final Thoughts
Another mini-final for the Hawks this week with plenty at stake. A win keeps them in top spot, a loss puts Hawthorn at the mercy of other teams’ results.
