The much anticipated grand final re-match didn’t live up to the expectations in Round 3 as the Hawks defeated Fremantle by 58 points at the MCG.

The Hawks got the jump on the Dockers with six goals to one in the opening term and even led by 37 points 17 minutes into the game. Then the game was all but over at half time as Alastair Clarkson’s team powered to a 10 goal lead – 12.5 to 2.8 at the main break.

The Hawthorn midfield dominated their Fremantle counterparts, with Jordan Lewis (37 disposals) and Sam Mitchell (36) leading the way, while four others – Isaac Smith, Matt Suckling, Bradley Hill and Jonathan Simpkin also picked up 30 disposals.

To put the midfield dominance and ease in which Hawthorn won their footy is the fact the Hawks had 14 players gather 20 or more disposals. The Dockers had just four.

Then there was the performance of Luke Breust who sent a message to the competition of the form he was about to unleash on the competition in 2014 with 24 disposals and three goals.

Smith was also damaging as one of the players who racked up 30 touches and kicked three goals, too.

The premiers had winners all over the ground, with fourth-gamer Will Langford shutting down Freo match-winner David Mundy, restricting him to just 20 disposals and little to no influence on the match.

The Dockers were without gun midfielder Nathan Fyfe though who was out suspended as they struggled to turn the Friday night contest into the hard-fought battle everyone expected.

Danyle Pearce was a shining light on a dark night for Freo, picking up a team-high 30 disposals and a goal.

What the coaches said

Hawthorn’s Alastair Clarkson: "We couldn't have possibly envisaged that it was going to be that good a start for our side; we've got a very, very high regard for Fremantle, and considering they've only conceded five goals per game the first two games of the season.

"To have six goals in the first 20 minutes of the game was really important and that then put them on the back foot a little bit. Scoreboard pressure is the most important pressure you can apply in footy.

"So we're really pleased with our start, our effort tonight and our work rate. We had 22 real goers tonight, which is important against a good side like Freo."

Fremantle’s Ross Lyon:
"We certainly came to play, we had really good preparation, there's no excuses here for particularly our first half.

"We're really disappointed, we're licking our wounds at the minute."
