With the 2014 season now complete, hawthornfc.com.au will review the season of those who played a senior game for the Hawks in 2014 with the help of GM - Football Operations Chris Fagan.

Shaun Burgoyne’s 2014 has been one his most consistent years since joining the Club at the end of 2009. Appropriately culminated with a well-deserved ‘Most Consistent’ award at the Peter Crimmins Medal this year.

At the ripe age of 32, Burgoyne isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. He has become a crucial player in the Hawks line-up acting as the ultimate utility player. Having played in defence, on the wing and in the midfield, Burgoyne has proved he is not only consistent but also versatile when required.

Of the 25 matches he played in 2014 he averaged 22 disposals, 11.4 kicks and 10.6 handballs.

It wasn’t as much his statistics that defined his season but his ability to be reactive to any situation and fill in the gaps when required. When Sam Mitchell missed eight matches during the season due to injury, Burgoyne played a vital role in the midfield. His experience accompanied with his silky smooth skills filled the gap left by Mitchell.

As one of the senior players at the Club, Burgoyne has shown leadership both on and off the field. He has stood up and taken charge at numerous times when the game has been in the balance by either kicking the winning goal, laying a bone-crunching tackle or taking a mark in front of his opponent in defence.

His 24 disposals and 2 goals in the Grand Final defined his 2014 season as he played an instrumental part in the victory over the Swans to gather his second premiership with the Hawks.

Burgoyne is one of the greats of the competition having won three premierships (2 with Hawthorn, 1 with Port Adelaide), and still has plenty more to offer to the Hawks in season 2015 and beyond.

What GM – Football Operations Chris Fagan said: “It was a great year by Shaun, he was a deserving winner of our most consistent award. He was very unlucky not to be an All Australian – our one-eyed view was that he should have been.

“He seems to be getting better with age because he’s making good contributions wherever he plays. We can swing him around wherever we need, he’s just a really invaluable player.”
